Silky Smooth

The Gravelton laid my Hunt front wheel bearings to rest last week. Loads of play, they have been rattling like a bag of nails ever since then this week the transmission has been playing the same game too. Too Loud! So time to fit some bearings and do a bit of maintenance today.

I hate doing any job without the right tools so after checking what my front wheel bearings were, I ordered some 6902s and a bearing press this week which arrived today.

After taking the front wheel off, I removed the centre lock disc which uses a cassette lockring tool.

Hunt wheel end caps are compression fit so you just pull them off to reveal the bearings.

fucked

I fitted my new 6902 bearing puller and tightened it up then tapped the bearing out from the other side. Then repeated on the other side. Simple.

Then I loaded up my new T-bar bearing press with a 6902 drift + a new bearing, pushed it through the hub, fitted the axle/bearing spacing tube, another bearing and the other drift and then just screwed them into place.. An easy 10 min job and why I love having the correct tools.

The front wheel is now silky smooth. Yes!

first time buying from probearingtools.com. Good value. Happy so far.

My attention then turned to the transmission. I took the rear wheel off, removed the cassette and checked the rear hub bearings and freehub. All smooth and ok except the freehub needed a touch of grease before putting the cassette back on.

I checked the chain and it was between 0.75 and 1.0mm so I decided to replace that now to extend the life of the cassette. If you catch your chain wear around 0.75 you can usually get 2 chains out of one cassette.

My old KMC X11 chain came off and I’m trying a Taya Onze 11spd chain for the first time this time to see how it goes. Changing gear with it was mint on the stand.

Finally, a quick front rotor true, rear mech 1st gear alignment tweak and I was done. The bike is now quiet and rattle free

won’t be that clean for long!
