Everyone loves a pub quiz right? In your local pub, having a beer. Daft team names and the quizmaster on the mike while you write your answers down and swap with another team to mark them. Well, our pub quiz game has just been upgraded and we love it.
A couple of weeks ago Sally and I were due to fly to Tenerife, for a long weekend the next day, so didn’t have much food in, so we decided to grab a bite at our local pub. Food done, we found out it was quiz night but the guy was setting up like a DJ. Speakers, laptop, big screen etc. Initially excited we didn’t have any cash so we thought we weren’t going to be able to play but he came round and took card payments and gave us a computer tablet and a bingo card! Awesome!
While he continued to register teams the tablet flashed up how to play etc and we entered our team name (PeeVeeDeeGee) and picked a song from a long list. I went for Stayin Alive by The Beegees
The quiz format is quite unique, very interactive and fun. All questions are answered on the tablet and all rounds increase in points value for a correct answer but the fastest team to answer get bonus points. And if you are the fastest, you’re team name pops up on the telly and blasts out the song you chose. Just to make you feel a bit special in that moment.
The rounds vary in topic and the format of the questions vary too. For simple answers you select the first letter of the answer, you may have to type a number in or arrange a multiple choice question into order. The key is speed and here is the best bit. On the last round, points are massive, you get a similar bonus for being fastest AND you get to nominate another team to take points off so if you are behind, you can tactically make big gaps up quickly.
So going back to our first quiz a couple of weeks ago we had a decent start, we had a horrific music round and going into the final round we were languishing in 5th, way down on the leaders. The stars aligned and we smashed the last round. We had the quickest correct answers again and again which gave us the chance to tactically remove points from the teams above us and then on the last question ‘What big breakfast presenters had a hit song in the 90’s‘, Answer ‘Zig and Zag‘ we were fastest again and we knew it was close.
After a tense few seconds the scores were announced in reverse order and we had won literally on the last question by 8 points. Not bad for two of us versus teams of 4+
Bingo
So why a bingo card? This is an extra round midway through the quiz to break things up a bit. Everyone stands up and numbers are called out. If one is on your card you sit down and you’re out. The last person standing wins extra points for the team.
Play your cards right
There is also an additional round which is optional. You buy a raffle ticket and if you are picked out you get to play a game of Play your cards right. Quite a famous TV show from the 80’s hosted by Bruce Forsyth. Good game, Good Game! Players can win a cash prize split between them and a chosen charity. Upto 3 players get to have a go and if there is no winner on the night, the pot rolls over. A young lady won the £65 pot at our first go. It’s a great addition to the night.
Overall, a great night and will now be a regular Wed night every other week for us. Also a shout out to the quizmaster (Wes?). He’s really good. He keeps things moving with plenty of banter. It’s a great format and thoroughly recommended. Check his Facebook page out and see if there is a quiz near you.

Adios
PS we came 5th last night (see first pic). Very close but another massive last round for us wasn’t enough this time
Experienced this new tablet format a couple of weeks ago myself. Definitely made things more interesting and interactive.
