I snapped my 2nd chain ever yesterday. To be fair I’ve known it’s been worn for a while now and been waiting for one of our shops to get some 11spd chains in so I can get one @ trade. Luckily I was less than a km away from home when it happened. Rounded a mini-roundabout and pressed on the pedals and one of the quick links went and it just rolled off. This was a KMC x11 which I’ve gone through plenty of.

Snapped chains can actually be dangerous if it happens at the wrong time like in a full on sprint but they can also cause damage too by wrapping around your mech and bending it, going into your rear wheel or scratching your frame. None of this happened to me so I was lucky.
A quick call to the emergency services (Sally) and she was down with the car to take me back home. A quick bike change and I was off again on the road bike.
The last time I snapped a chain was a brand new Shimano one about 20 years ago. I hopped onto a kerb and one of the link plates snapped clean through. Probably a manufacturing fault. I’ve definitely not made some alarming power gains recently.
If it’s another 20 years before I snap another, I can live with that.
