Today was a quick scoot around Brechfa Forest as the legs need a rest.
The weather was bit overcast this morning, not cold though. After getting my kit together and putting the bike on the car I drove 35 mins to the very basic and unassuming trail head of the Brechfa Forest MTB Trails.
My original 35km route was to take in the Derwen Green trail then after a short road section, climb from Abergorlech right up onto the top of the valley and then take some back lanes across the top and back down to base.
The start was a wide, open forest road climb. I was aware some trails were closed, in particular the blue extension which I fancied, but after a km I was met with a trail closure. Temporary green route signs took me up a long climb but fizzled out before the top and I was left with no real idea where I was. I just decided to carry on the forest road as I had an inkling I was heading towards somewhere near the route up from Abergorlech. After a winding descent, hey presto I picked up my route but obviously missing out a chunk of it early on.

The climb up the valley from here was steady. Nothing too steep and not a sole in sight. Just me. Eventually I topped out and exited the forest at the top where a bold, pink horsebox greeted me.

From here I transversed the top of the forest which was peppered with short little kickers I was able to sprint up in the big ring. Eventually I began the descent back to the main road. After a mile I was back to base with just the short climb back to the car.

A great little blast around the forest although it felt like I didn’t scratch the surface. If you want some good quality gravel riding away from the crowds put Brechfa on your list.
