Under the HUD

After been out on the road for two days, I got home last night and decided I needed to have a pedal. I’d unsuccessfully tried a Zwift race on Monday with tired legs after The National Forest Explorer on Sunday, not my smartest move, but a day off Tuesday while driving up the M1 rested them enough to try 90 mins when I got home.

I opted to join a 100K Endurance ride. I was never going to do the full distance I just wanted to get a solid 90 mins in the bag.

The start was managed at reasonable 2.2w/kg which gave the 100+ peloton chance to group and then push the effort up a notch to a nice consistent pace right in my sweetspot with surges on the climbs. 2.5-3.0w/kg. Ideal.

The difference with this one though is I decided to change to a 1st person view rather than the usual drone type and turn the heads-up display (HUD) off. So no stats, map, chat, numbers. Nothing. And I have to say it was quite refreshing not knowing what climbs were coming up, where I was in the group, what watts I was pushing out etc. I just rode in the group. Pushed harder when the road went up and eased off when I hit the front. I found myself closing gaps and chasing groups that had clipped off the front after the climbs. Quite realistic and made the time go quicker. Shock horror, I actually enjoyed it!

just riding, no screen clutter
