The Clicks & Likes

My Gravelton Events facebook page has just rolled over the 2000 follower mark and as I’ve been accused in the past for saying and doing things on there for the clicks and likes I thought I’d share some insights on what I’ve learned over the past few years as the page has grown.

Firstly, although I share when my page followers reach certain milestones, it’s not the reason I do it. I use Facebook as a tool to reach and engage a like-minded community. As it’s got more popular, more people have found it, have chosen to follow it and thats it. Clicks, likes, followers are just a symptom of that and nothing else.

The page actually qualifies for monetisation but I haven’t turned it on. Not interested.

The biggest thing I’ve seen is when there has been a bit of controversy. It’s great for business if you’re in it for that 🤣

Remember the complaint at The Peaky Finder? That went a bit viral and for some reason drew in a whole load of new followers. Remember my recent online pile on about The Slate Trail ride I did with the impassable trail? On average my posts will usually get 2-3K views. That one blew up and received over 85K views. Not all good because I had to deal with trolls, dickheads and idiots and ban some people but the net result, again, was a follower boost. I don’t know if it’s the algorithm or something else but there is a definite correlation.

And to confirm my theory is correct, the complaint I received from The Sherwood Shakedown on Sunday, another follower boost which has taken the page over the 2K followers mark.

controversy = followers

So what do I conclude from that? If I really wanted to focus on gaining as many clicks, like and follows as possible I’d double down on click-bait content. The stuff that divides opinion and creates arguments because I’ve proved it works! But I don’t and I won’t.

You may also have seen a trial Facebook Ad I’ve been running the last few days too. Just an experiment. The budget is £2 a day for 7 days. So far its cost me £11.76 but has put the page in front of people at bit quicker than normal. It has created some extra traffic and I’ve had a few followers message me directly from it asking about events, so I can also anecdotally confirm, if you want to boost your page’s followers you can effectively buy them too!
The real test will be when it ends and if I see a drop-off in traffic and engagement
